Omma

Hey everybody,
My friend heard of a new Korean restaurant opened in Outremont district. We wanted to give it a try as we both like Korean food. So here we go :

It is not the typical Korean restaurant, it has that «Outremont French» vibe in it. I found that the cook tried to force the thing to fit into the neighborhood mold which can be good...
We were first served with one side dish : black soybean simmered in soy sauce.

Sam Dak Bulgogi -- Spicy barbecued chicken fillet, lettuce wrap, rice and kimchi (18$).

Rice
Lettuce with gochujang

Spicy Salmon -- Grilled salmon fillet with a gochujang sauce and spring onions (18$).

 Enjoy!

Overall, the ingredients used were really fresh. Both the chicken and the salmon were well cooked. But if you are looking for a more «authentic» Korean restaurant, that is not the place for you. Although, for a Korean fusion dish, you can sure give it a try.

Juliette & Chocolat

Hello everybody,

What can pump up any girl who seems a bit sad? Yeah, you guess it right -->  chocolate. As me and my friend live close to a «Juliette & Chocolat», we decided for a midnight snack to go there and see if it lives up the hype.

We were not that craving for sweets though, so we simply ordered their «fondue au chocolat» with fruits and an expresso. We definitively have to go back to not only take more picture (they have so much brownies, fudges... with nice presentation), but also to try one of their crazy chocolate ice cream (it looked huge on another table next to ours, we were drooling over but sadly already ordered).

Overall, I have to admit that this fondue was boring, nothing particular and it sure doesn't represent this restaurant. The expresso was just right, not bad, not especially good. Otherwise, they have savoury crepes, sweet one, brownies, chocolate to drink... they even have a small stand on the front door where they sell them. Just a little mention, as most of the items on the menu are sweet, we need a little more water please.

The place was very nice to discuss even if it was crowded, we didn't need to speak louder to hear the other one which is a plus. Recommend it for couple or just between girl friends, really pleasant environment. Plus, they have many locations, for instance on St-Denis, Laurier street, etc.

La Maison Bulgogi

Hello,
La Maison Bulgogi is a Korean restaurant located close to Guy-Concordia metro station. We were looking for a place to eat and saw a lot of asian people inside, so we told ourselves that it should be good for quality and price.
The waiter was Korean but we heard the cook and other people working in the kitchen speaking Chinese. We got the usual side dish : potatoes simmered in soy sauce, kimchi cabbage, seaweed and bean sprout (from left to right). The potatoes were really tasty, seasoned and well cooked. The kimchi was average. The bean sprout was bland. But the seaweed seemed to us not really fresh.
We ordered «japchae» which is stir fied sweet potato noodles with vegetables and beef. It is a savoury dish with a hint a sweetness which we found well balanced. It was a non spicy one.
The second dish was soft tofu cooked with vegetables. It was spicy but not too much, just enough to bring some caracter to this otherwise tasteless plate.
Finally, I found both dishes good. Their portion was quite big. They are really fast to serve you. I would recommend this place. We have to go back for their Korean bbq which more looks like their main attractions. All their dishes seem really good. They serve soups, stews, bbq, stir-fried and much more.

Belgian waffles

Hey everybody,
You want to taste the best Belgian waffles in Montreal? We found the place for that! It is on St-Denis (corner Ontario Street) around number 2007-2011.

It is a little, cosy and friendly store. The dough is handmade by the owner. They can make the waffles either in rectangular shape (traditional shape) or in small balls like those on the picture. You can get them with ice cream, chocolat syrup or fruits. We got the original and more basic one to have a real taste of their dough. APPROVED. Crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. They literally melt in your mouth. Not too sweet which is good.
Warning : They are addictive! You can't stop popping them in your mouth :P

Overall, I definitively recommend this place and introduce it to my friends.

Pizzeria Dei Compari

Hey readers,
I tried another restaurant with my brother. We were just wandering around the metro Berri-Uqam and saw this pizzeria which looked yummy (little line-up so we assumed that it shouldn't be that bad).
First, we tried a «brio chinotto». It is a carbonated drink and tastes like Coca-Cola, but in less sweet and less chemical feeling when drinking it. We both like it.
We ordered 2 pizzas : one with chicken. It was delicious. The big slices of chicken were marinated, so very tasty and tender. The crust was approved by my brother (who I considered a pro with bread, I mean he LOVES whatever relates to white bread, baguette, crust...). The cheese wasn't overwhelming.

And the other one with snails : after having the chicken one, according to me the snails didn't taste as good as the other one. We can't reproach them using can's snails but I didn't find anything special about this pizza. Not a distintive taste got out of it.

We ended up the dinner with a Tiramisu. A total disappointed, especially having eating homemade one, this one was kind of made with ice cream or something that was still frozen (surely not mascarpone) and the ladyfinger (Savoiardi) were surely not soaked with coffee. Although nice presentation.

Overall, I would recommend this pizzeria, especially for the chicken one.

Villa Wellington Restaurant

Villa Wellington is a Peruvian Restaurant located in Verdun. It is not expensive and serves BIG portion (I don't even exaggerate it is really huge).

We started the dinner with a seafood soup. There were plenty of mussels, shrimps and palourdes. The soup was tasty and a bit spicy.

«Arroz chaufa» is a fried rice seafood. It reminds me of Spanish paëlla. The rice absorbed the bouillon which made them tasty and different from the Chinese fried rice (the name Chaufa really similar with the Chinese dish Chow fan). I liked this one the most among all the dishes.

«Jalea» is a plate composed of fried shrimp, calamari and fish over thinly sliced fried potatoes. It is offered in small or big size. The one below on the picture is considered small. The batter was good not too think or soggy. However, my friends said that the calamari were comparable with those from Marven's (but still missing something to stand against Marven's famous fried calamari).

Here is a picture to give a perspective on how big this portion of fried seafood was.
«Lomo saltado» is a dish of stir-fried sliced beef with onion, tomato and french fries. It was quite oily and didn't taste any particular spices.

«Seco de Cabrito» which is in this case a beef stew with coriander. It was bland, I expected the flavour of coriander and other spices more prominent. The meat was tender and not dry. It was served with a bowl of fluffy withe rice.

Even though we got an excellent value for the food, it was still expensive overall.

D. Pita Bread (Cooking Time: +4h)
If you want soft pita breads, buy the white ones at the grocery store.
If you want to eat healthier, buy the whole wheat pita breads.
If you have some time by your side, make your own as follows:
Flour (3 Cups)
Flour for kneading (-1 Cup)
Salt (+1 teaspoon)
Warm water (1/2 Cup - yeast)
Warm water (1 cup - Flour)
Sugar (1teaspoon)
Olive Oil (3 tablespoons)
----------------------------------------------------------
1. Put yeast and sugar in a small bowl.
2. Warm water (1/2 cup).
(Note: If you cannot put your finger into the water, water is too hot. And if water is too hot, yeast might die and the pita breads may not rise.)
3. Pour the warm water (from 2) into the small bowl with yeast and sugar and mix the ingredients all together.
4. Put it aside for about +10 mins.
5. While waiting for the yeast to rise, put 3 cups of flours and salt in a large bowl.
6. Mix the flour and salt and make a whole in the middle of the bowl.
7. Once 10 min have passed, put the yeast mix into the big bowl with flour and salt. Stir the mix.
8. Now, pour warm water (1 cup) into the big bowl.
9. Once all mixing is done, pour the olive oil into the bowl, where the dough is.
10. Cover the dough with olive oil.
11. Place a cellophane over the large bowl where the dough is, and put away the bowl into the warm place.
(I'd put the bowl and then a bit of water beneath, around the bowl, and keep the casserole warm for 3 hours.)
12. When the dough has risen, take it out and add flour until the dough does not stick anymore.
13. Cut the dough with your hand into many smaller balls of dough so that one dough can form one pita.
14. Let the small balls sit in a warm place to rise for 10 min.
15. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
16. Flatten the small balls of dough.
17. Place the cookie sheet on the pan or grease the pan with vegetable oil at each time.
18. Put the flat uncooked pita and cook each side for 3 to 4 min.
(E.g.: One pita consumes 6 to 8 min each.)
----------------------------------------------------------
The recipe is from Dede's website:

There is an excellent video of Dede making the Pita Bread in the above website; so, it's worth visiting Dede's website especially if it is your first time making a pita bread!
----------------------------------------------------------
Notes

The only thing I'd change is the amount of yeast. On her website, it states 7 grams. But I found my pita breads, smelling a bit of yeast for having too much yeast in them.

I ended up having about 10 pita breads. I burnt one!.. haha. So be careful! Depending on the thickness of your bread 4 mins in the heat might burn your bread. The site recommends 450 degrees. Mine came out too crispy. If that also happens to your pita breads, I'd recommend to put the pita breads while they are hot in a bag, so that they become moist again. Another option is once the pita breads had more or less cooled down, put them in a bag with 2 pieces of kitchen towers. The next day, the pita breads will be moist again.
========================================
Now, serve all together!
Enjoy!
